What Affects Your 2027 Health Insurance Premium?

ChatGPT Image Sep 9, 2026, 03_29_06 PM.png

Gross Premium Versus Your Estimated Premium

Every plan has a full monthly price, sometimes called the gross premium.

If you qualify for an advance premium tax credit, the credit may reduce the amount you pay each month. The Marketplace determines eligibility using current federal rules and the information reported on your application.

Your final price may change if:

  • Your projected income changes

  • Your household changes

  • You move

  • You gain access to qualifying employer coverage

  • Information on the application is corrected

  • Plan pricing changes before enrollment

Update your Marketplace application when circumstances change.

A Low Premium Does Not Always Mean
a Low-Cost Plan

Monthly premiums are only one part of your healthcare spending.

Also compare:

  • Deductible

  • Primary-care copay

  • Specialist copay

  • Urgent-care and emergency-room costs

  • Coinsurance

  • Prescription copays

  • Out-of-network exposure

  • Maximum out-of-pocket limit

HealthCare.gov recommends considering premiums and expected out-of-pocket costs when comparing plans.

Bronze, Silver or Gold: What’s the Difference?

ACA metal levels describe how you and the insurance company generally divide covered healthcare costs. They do not indicate the quality of the plan, its doctors or the medical care you receive.

Bronze plans generally trade lower monthly premiums for higher costs when you use care. Gold plans generally have higher premiums but lower costs when receiving covered services. Silver plans fall between the two and are the only plans that provide cost-sharing reductions to eligible applicants.

When comparing metal levels, consider the total potential cost—not just the monthly premium. Review each plan’s deductible, copayments, coinsurance, out-of-pocket limit, provider network and prescription coverage.

Your eligibility for premium tax credits does not necessarily determine which metal level you can select. However, if you qualify for cost-sharing reductions, you must choose an eligible Silver plan to receive them.
