What types of health‑insurance plans are available and how do they differ?

There are several kinds of health plans. A Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) usually requires you to see doctors in its network and get a referral to see a specialist. Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) give you more choice; you can see doctors in or out of network, though out‑of‑network care costs more. Other options include Exclusive Provider Organizations (EPOs), Point of Service (POS) plans, and High‑Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs), which can be paired with a Health Savings Account. Each type balances cost and flexibility differently. Understanding these differences helps you choose a plan that fits your needs.
