Renew or Switch Your Marketplace Health Insurance for 2027

Already have ACA Marketplace health insurance? Open Enrollment is your opportunity to review your coverage, update your information and decide whether to keep your plan or choose something different for 2027.
Before renewing, compare your updated monthly payment, benefits, doctors and prescription coverage. A plan that worked well this year may no longer fit your budget or healthcare needs.
Aura Insure helps eligible customers compare available plans and complete enrollment 100% online, without a mandatory sales call.
Should You Renew or Switch Plans?
Start with three questions:
Does your current plan still meet your healthcare needs?
Does its 2027 cost fit your budget?
Are better-fitting alternatives available in your area?
You may decide to stay with your current plan. Comparing first helps you make that decision with current information.
Step 1: Read Your Renewal Notices
Look for notices from your insurance company and the Marketplace before Open Enrollment.
Review whether your plan will remain available, what coverage you may be renewed into, changes to your payment and any requests for documents.
Do not assume automatic renewal will happen in every situation. Follow the instructions in your notices and take action before the applicable deadline.
Step 2: Update Your Expected 2027 Income
Marketplace savings depend on your expected household income for the year you want coverage.
Consider whether you expect a different salary, new business income, fewer working hours or other changes in 2027. Also review household members and any offers of employer coverage.
If you work for yourself, generally start with expected net business income after allowable expenses. Read our self-employed income guide for examples.
Keep your application current during the year. Receiving more advance premium tax credit than you ultimately qualify for can result in repayment when you file your taxes.
Step 3: Compare the Cost of Keeping Your Plan
Look beyond the monthly premium.
Plan feature | What to check |
Monthly premium | Your payment after any applicable financial assistance |
Deductible | What you pay for certain services before the plan shares costs |
Copayments and coinsurance | Your charges when receiving covered care |
Out-of-pocket maximum | Your limit for covered, in-network spending subject to the limit |
Expected healthcare use | Appointments, prescriptions and treatments you anticipate |
For example, a $50 increase in monthly premium adds $600 in annual premium payments. Whether another plan offers better value depends on its benefits and the care you expect to use.
Read our 2027 health insurance cost guide before comparing options.
Step 4: Check Your Doctors and Medications
Make a list of providers and prescriptions you want to keep.
Verify participation in the exact plan and network you are considering. For medications, check coverage, estimated costs and any approval requirements.
Do this even when staying with the same insurance company. Ask the insurer and your provider to clarify anything uncertain before selecting coverage.
Step 5: Choose Your Plan and Confirm Enrollment
After comparing, select the available plan that best fits your circumstances.
Save your enrollment confirmation, review your effective date and follow the insurer’s instructions for any required first premium. Respond promptly to requests for verification documents.
If you are switching, confirm how the change affects your existing coverage. Avoid ending coverage early without understanding when the replacement begins.
When Can You Renew or Switch for 2027?
For Texas, Florida, Ohio, Michigan and South Carolina, which use HealthCare.gov, the current enrollment schedule is:
Deadline | Coverage timing |
November 1, 2026 | Open Enrollment begins |
December 15, 2026 | Enroll for coverage beginning January 1, 2027 |
January 15, 2027 | Final Open Enrollment deadline; selections after December 15 generally begin February 1 |
Any required first premium must be paid by the insurer’s deadline.
Outside Open Enrollment, changing Marketplace plans generally requires eligibility for a Special Enrollment Period. Restrictions may apply.
